Our Story - La Nostra Storia

The Italian Canadian League of Manitoba Inc. (ICLM) owns and operates Centro Caboto Centre. But, it has a long and storied history as an umbrella organization for the Italian Canadian community in Manitoba.

In the early 1960s, John B. Mottola, the Vice-Consul of Italy pitched the concept the community need a strong representative voice for the community as a whole. He was soon joined by Rev. Father Domenico Fiore, Pastor at Holy Rosary Church, Romeo Bidinosti, Attilio Cantafio, Rose Champlone, Sam Loschiavo and Anthony Sherbo.

These community leaders and five existing Italian-Canadian clubs in Winnipeg – Associazione Fogolar-Veneta (later renamed the Fogolar Association di Winnipeg), Fratellanza Amatese, Italo-Canadian Club, Leonardo da Vinci Association and Roma Society – formed the ICLM in 1964.

The ICLM’s mandate then, as it is today, was to represent and promote the interests and presence of the Italian Canadian community in Manitoba. Over its 55-year history, hundreds of volunteers have given their time and expertise to the ICLM and much has been accomplished.
  • In 1967 and 1968, together with Holy Rosary Church, organized a committee for the settlement of a large influx of Italian immigrants to Manitoba
  • Sponsored one of the original Folklorama pavilions which continues to this day
  • Organized fundraising campaigns to help victims of earthquakes and floods in Italy
  • Liaised with other ethnic and cultural organizations in Manitoba and Canada
  • Organized and sponsored many events and programs throughout its history including Columbus Day Galas, Mardi Gras Celebrations, culinary events, sports programs and events, recreational activities and cultural activities and programs.
The most important achievement for the ICLM was providing a physical home for these initiatives on behalf of the Italian Canadian community in Manitoba.

In 1980, the ICLM bought and managed Casa D’Italia. Located on Notre Dame Avenue, it gave the community a place to meet, hold events, and offer classroom and rehearsal space. Recognizing that this modest home didn’t entirely meet the needs of the community, the ICLM struck a committee charged with developing a new home for the community. The Casa D’Italia was eventually sold to make way for Centro Caboto Centre, which opened in 1998.

Initially, the ICLM created a separate Board of Directors to manage the Centre.  Several years ago, the two Boards were amalgamated.

Of the five founding clubs, three remain in existence today: Fogolar Association di Winnipeg, Fratellanza Amatese and Roma Society. They are joined by seven more organizations: Associazione Amici Abbruzesi, Comitato degli Italiani di Terza Età, Gruppo Sportivo Italiano, Italian Canadian Foundation Inc., La Lupa di Roma Lodge, San Mango D’Aquino Society, and Sons and Daughters of Italy Garibaldi Lodge.
